PET HEALTH DAY 2017
Sunday afternoon, OCTOBER 1ST, 2017
Noon - 4 PM
If and when you signed up through SignUp Genius, Delta Airline employees got an early 2 week chance to sign up before anybody else. Previous UPF Volunteers were not made aware of the sign-up sheet until 3 weeks AFTER the initial sign-up time. We were busy with a Distribution Day on September 9th, and the Inaugural Muttstache Dash 5K. Because of this snafu, several of the positions that were previously held by long-time volunteer attendees for Pet Health Day were snapped up. We are asking that all the great volunteers that show up for this event be able to show some flexibility to be able to change what you are asked to do the day of the event if asked to......if at all possible. EVERYONE who volunteers that day is making great contributions...no matter what it is you are doing! We are sorry for this confusion!
We do request if at all possible that you arrive 1/2 hour BEFORE your respective time slots so that you can either receive training (if needed), or transition over if you are taking over from another person). Training is important if you have never done this event before for it to go smoothly. To that extent, those who have signed on for the first shift are getting a chance to meet other volunteers, get some training, and also a breakfast from Tucker's Restaurant on Vine Street (just up from St. Francis Seraph Church). We are meeting in the cafeteria of St. Francis Seraph School just to the east side of the church at 10 am. At that time we will have folks available to help give you training for what you are going to be asked to do. Not hard....and no pop quizzes! Church service lets out at 11:00 am...or so...depending on the length of the homily for the morning. While the parishioners are emptying the church, we have 45 minutes or so to prepare the inside of the church for the event. Father will be conducting a blessing of the animals outside of the church on the front steps while we are slipping into the church and preparing for the event.
We pray for GREAT weather next Sunday in celebrating the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, and also Pet Health Day. Dress in comfortable casual clothes that you know might get dirty. Park on the street on Liberty or Vine close to the church, and you can also try the parking lot behind the St. Francis Seraph Church School. That parking lot is accessible through Moore Street OFF E. Liberty Street. Click on the previous sentence for a large map of the area and to find Moore Street, as well as the school.
People who are bringing their pets will be assigned numbers for times to be back at the church to register. That 'assigning of numbers' will give those folks who show up 2-3 hours early the chance to do something else with their pets, or go home and then come back at the times assigned to them. Those with dogs will also be issued POOP BAGS. Accidents do happen when nature calls. If you see this happening on the street or in the church, please gently remind the people their duty to pick up the poop (it is a City Ordinance that they have to clean up after their pets on the street.) In the church, it is important that any messes are cleaned up as soon as possible, and place any poop bags or soiled paper towels in provided sealed garbage cans. We need to respect our host: St. Francis Seraph Church, who have been gracious to hold this event each year in their beautiful building. Brother Tim should be around if you have any questions about the beautiful church that hosts this event.
For those of you who will be there at 4 pm, it is important that we clean up and pack up as soon as we can. We need to return the church to the same way it was when it was opened up to us.
Included in this news letter will be the duties that are entailed for each position that is available the day of the event. It would help to come early if you have not attended before, as it can be confusing with a great number of people with their pets, end-of-Mass, the Blessing of the Animals (just after Mass),and the actual event all seeming to happen at once. Don't worry, it will all work out! For security purposes, Officer Diana Cloud of the Cincinnati Police Department will once again be there at the event in front of the church to help provide security oversight. If you have any concerns, feel free to approach her.

This will great day to give back to an under-served community and the pets that are part of their families! Just a reminder that many of these pets may be very scared to be in a crowd of people, and possibly unpredictable. PLEASE do not approach the pets to pet them or make over them if you do not ask the owner's first, and use common sense if the dog or cat appears scared or wary of you! Thank you in advance to all of you who make this event possible! Without you, there would not be a Pet Health Day!
If you have any questions, please feel to email us at
